James and I went out with friends tonight. We had a wonderful time at a restaurant called "San Filipe". It is the most popular mexican restaurant in our town...love the fahitas Smile

The conversation drifted to American Idol so I invited our friends over to the house to watch it. The first 30 minutes (with commercials) dealt with group pairing issues... which all five of us watching thought was too much crying, complaining, and drama. It kind of turned into all the rest of the reality shows with all that drama.

To be honest? we couldn't wait till they got down to the meat and potatoes of actually singing. Now if they had actually focused on the different groups practicing, then I/we could have gleened who actually had talent.

Now when the groups stepped up to the plate and performed for the judges...then you could see who got down to business and who couldn't get past "cry baby" wanna go home.

Simon is hard on the contestants, but in a way, they need to be focused. There are some real talents there...then there are the "fluff n' puff" for reality tv. I say cull the crap, and let's see what these kids can do.

Nice Diet Coke commercial with Heidi in it.

I love it when friends are watching with us, cause we can discuss and pick our favs, and I like to woooo loudly when I hear a great set of pipes.

Oh, and didn't I hear a version of KFAR this week too Big Grin

Rock on American Idol,

Love, Janet

Smile They have narrowed the group to 36 and talk about nail biting suspense. In walks performer...ummm...are you in? Or are you out. The news is not so great...it is wonderful Big Grin The fab four keeps you on pins and needles. The sing offs added to the pressure, but in the end, it was a good way to find out who could sing on a dime and carry it home Wink

I am surprised at Simon a bit, because at first, I really thought he was being tough, because he was truely looking for talent. This season he has leaned toward "beauty". Case in point? "Bikini clad" girl, and last night the "good looking blonde one, or the other one" Talent people...talent. Good gravy, look at Keith Richards, and he has been with Rolling Stones for years...makes a great pirate
though...hehe.

Now, the emotions and drama rama are running high this season. It is great to see everyone pulling together and supporting each other. I felt sorry for them having to sit in rooms on the floor though waiting for the judges to come in and say the group was in or out. I thought... can't they afford some chairs? Anyway, that was corrected last night as they did have chairs waiting to go in individually, or in pairs.

I have to mention Tatiana. Simon wants her to be less annoying. It may be hard to do for her, because she is a very emotional person. She has a great voice. Anytime you can be creative with your vocals as you sing...wow, but she is going to have to curb the outbursts. I just don't know if she can win the competition if she doesn't calm down. If Simon finds it annoying odds are the voting public will too...we did.

I wish them all luck...everyone, because I know this means a lot to them. They need to stay focused on the music, and make sure they know the lyrics inside and out, because when they are nervous, they can forget the words. Pick songs that showcase their voice, and wear trendy outfits.

Who will America Love?

It will be fun to see who wins Big Grin

Love, Janet

My List of fav's tonight:

Jackie Tohn. - Great - Loved her clothes and her stage presence.
Ricky Braddy - Great Voice - Didn't care for hair style.
Alexis Grace - Never Loved a Man - Whooo she can sing the blues...loved her voice! Amazing! Simon: "One to Watch" Wink
Danny Gokey - Hero - I love His Voice - Yes, Go, Go, Go! This guy can sing Big Grin
Casey Carlson - No...I don't think she is ready - Every little thing she does. The judges called it karaoke.
Brent Keith - Hick Town - Promising Country - New Country Pop. He has a good voice.
Stevie Wright - You Belong with me - Not a good song for her. She is young maybe next time.
Anoop Desai - Angel of Mine - Audience connects well with Anoop. I thought he was out of tune in places. The judges thought he was sharp. He sings with lots of feeling though.
Casey Carlson - Every Little Thing She Does - No, I don't think she is ready. The Judges called it Karaoke.
Michael Sarver - I don't want to be - Audience loves him. He is a good singer. I thought his voice was strained in places.
Ann Marie Boskovich - Natural Woman - She is good, but she needed more Soul in the song. Beautiful girl.
Stephen Fowler - Rock with you - Not the best song for his voice. I loved it when he sang and played the keyboard. He forgot the lyrics, but you could tell that he connected with the song. I love his voice and I hope he will continue to sing.
Tatiana Del Toro - I'm Saving All My Love For You - I thought she started out "low" (pitch). She has a beautiful voice and does a great job on the high notes. I loved her ending on the song. She got a standing Ovation from the audience. She was more calm tonight and the judges liked her better the emotional way...lol.

Ahh, tonight...there were only a couple of performances that stood out. I am really impressed by 16 year old Allison Iraheta. She sang "alone" and the girl has that smokey blues voice that you can hear on an album. She is a star bright Wink You go sweetie!

Jasmine Murray sang " I'm not gonna write you a love song". Right out of the gate she sounded too low to begin with. It was an adverage performance.

Matt Giraud sang Viva La Vida and while I love this ColdPlay Song...I just bought the Cold Play MP3 on Amazon last night...It was just not the right song for him. He needs to handle the microphone better. I don't know if anyone noticed but he had a breathe "boom" on the microphone. He did a very soulful performance on Georgia. But it seemed the group tonight wanted to focus on Band Songs. Lots of times the singers want to pick songs they like instead of songs that bring out their vocal range and talent.

Jeanine Vailes sang a Maroon5 song.
She was not in key in places. I just don't see her moving to the top 12.

What can I say about Nick Mitchell? He is the Carnival Barker who can get the audience to react...even the judges. He is fun. I love him. He would be great onstage in a comedy act. He can work the audience. Top 12 no. He called Simon "Sassy Pants"...hahaha!

Kris Allen sang "Man in the Mirror". I think his voice is adverage, but he is cute, and I think the young girls of America will vote for him...like they did David Cook. Cute Sells...although it should be talent. It is hard for other singers to sing Michael Jackson songs...nobody can touch Michael's style onstage, or his voice.

Megan Joy Corkrey sang "Put Your Records On" She is a dresden doll...beautiful. She has the look and she can sing, but to be honest? I didn't care for the jerking movements of her arms onstage. Her movements need to be more relaxed and fluid. She's got the Amy Winehouse appeal though, and the judges seem to think she has that commercial "Look".

Matt Breitzke sang "If you can only see" by Tonic. I liked him, but as far as commercial market appeal I don't think he will win the vote. I think he has a good voice, and he carried the song through, but top 12? No.

Jesse Langseth sang "Betty Davis Eyes" I liked her. Loved the song. It is one of my favs.

Kai Kalama Sang "What becomes of the Broken Hearted". He went off pitch, but I like him.

Mishavonna Henson Sang "Drops of Jupiter" by Train. I happen to love this song:O) I think she can sing. At the end she fell off a bit, and she needs to loosen up.

Adam Lambert...the guy reminds me of a "goth" Elvis. He sang "Satisfaction" by The Rolling Stones. I love it when the singer can get the audience into action, or get them into the groove, and Adam can do this. Guess they saved the best performance for last, cause he got a loud Whooo from me...oh and wow Big Grin Now, he has the look, he can sing, he needs to reign in a bit though. In the middle of Satisfaction he was kinda doin' his own thing and it was like a jumble, but the guy can lay it out!

Now, about working the audience. It is a beautiful experience when an artist has great Stage Presence. Moving onstage, touching hands, getting people on their feet and involved...it is the WOW factor. You can be the Buzz, or be the DUD...Next Group...get the audience up...get them wanting more and you will get that seat Wink in the top 12...Work It!

My Picks:

1. Allison Iraheta
2. Adam Lambert
3. Kris Allen - I think he will get the popular young vote, but Megan Joy Corkrey just may squeak by with the popular vote too...just a guess, but it may be close.

Who I would pick for #3 - Mishavonna Henson

Love and I wish them all luck Big Grin

Janet

I thought last night didn't really have anything that I was "WOW" about.

I think I liked the sound of the blonde girl who twists her body...

Personally, I did NOT like the fella who sang Satisfaction...it was WAY over the top...He does have a great voice but he needs to tone it down. And he does this thing where he drags his foot and I find that cheeky...and fake.

The 16yo girl who sang Alone was pretty strong BUT I think she might be a one trick pony...

We'll see.

I look forward to next week...Lil Rounds is my favorite left to sing.

Janet, awesome recap on last nights show.

I finally had a chance to watch it also. I have not seen any of the shows since they ended the try-outs...have been too busy...

WOW...I had no idea this years concept is to have 12 perform and only keep 3 of them...that is quite hard to do...wow!!! The pressure these singers are under...I cannot even imagine!!!

I really liked Allison Iraheta...what a voice...amazing!!! I hope she makes it through!!! I also likes the blond cute Megan Joy Corkrey and I agreed on what the judges had to say about her!!!

Laura, I agree with you. Adam is quite over the top!!! If he makes it, he does have to tone it down!

Looking forward to next week!!!

My three numbered picks made the grade Wink They will be giving a "Wild Card" a second chance. It will be interesting to see whom they bring back. My guess is Tatiana, because the girl can sing, and she has Paula's "Star" jewelry Wink Of course the judges like Corkrey too. Let's see what the next group can do...LOVE IT Cool

Update: Looks like they will be looking for 3 Wild cards?

My Picks:

1. Tatiana
2. Mishavonna Henson
3....Haven't decided yet;O)

I just bought on Itunes:

Satisfaction sung by Adam Lambert
Alone sung by Allison Iraheta
and Drops of Jupiter by Mishavonna Henson

Big Grin

Peace, Janet

Big Grin

Von Smith sang "You're all I need to get by". He got the audience on their feet and the judges liked him. He sang the song with meaning.

Taylor Vaifanua sang "If I ain't got you". Will she be remembered? Adverage performance. Top 12 no.

Alex Wagner-Trugman sang "I guess that's why they call it the blues" He is what you call an underdog. Screamed the lyrics and added the gravel tones here and there. Dropped the mic stand onstage. Sweet guy, but not top 12.

Arianna Afsar Sang "The Winner takes it all" The song was just too old for her. She over sang the vocals. Not top 12.

Ju'not Joyer Sang "Hey There Delilah" This guy has smooth vocals. I could feel the emotion in the song. People were on their feet.

Kristen McNamara Sang "Give me one reason to stay here" The audience was on their feet, but the judges were not sure of who she was.

Nathaniel Marshall Sang "I would do anything for Love" Audience on their feet. He sang with feeling. Audience loved it. Show more.

Felicia Barton Sang "No One" I liked her. She nailed the song. They brought her back after telling her no red chair week.

Scott MacIntyre Sang "Listen to my heart break" He has a good voice, but I just don't think that it is a solo singer commercial voice.

Kendall Beard Sang "This one's for the Girls" She has a good voice. I liked her.

Jorge Nunez Sang "Don't let the Sun go down on me" Loved his voice. He sang with feeling, which comes from the heart. I would like to hear him sing a song with both languages included;O)

Lil Rounds Sang "Be without you" Audience involved. Very strong vocals. She can sing;O) Love it when the audience roars approval!

My Picks:

1. Lil Rounds - Great Pipes
2.Ju'not Joyner - Smooth Vocals
3.Felicia Barton - She is Hot

Tonight the group sang the song "Hot and Cold" I was luke warm on the choice of their group song, but they all sang well together, and I loved the emotion on their faces.

The winners tonight were:

1. Lil Rounds - Be Without You
2. Scott MacIntyre - Mandolin Rain
3. Jorge Nunez - Don't Let the Sun go down on me

Don't get me wrong, I am glad that America voted for Scott, but I just don't think his voice is commercial "solo". In a band as a keyboard player...yes.

Jorge has a good voice and I would love to hear him sing a bilingual song.

Lil Rounds "is Smokin'" She has that natural talent that can win this competition.

Wild Cards:

Von
Jasmine
Ricky
Megan
Tatiana - got one out of two that I picked.
Matt
Anoop

The Wild Card Show Big Grin

Jesse sang: Tell me Something Good - She has a soulful voice.

Matt Sang Who's Lovin' You - I didn't care for the bandana, but Wow, this guy can lay out the blues. Whoa! Loved it!

Megan Sang Black Horse - She has these quirky movements that kind of turn me off, but she does have a unique voice. The judges call her "fun".

Von Sang "Sorry seems to be the hardest word" This was just not his song, in my opinion. I just didn't connect with him as a singer. The judge term "ordinary".

Jasmine Sang - "Reflection" she had some flat spots and the vocals weren't consistant.

Ricky Sang - "Superstitious" People were dancing. I liked his vocals. He can sing his heart out. Love it.

Tatiana Sang "Saving all my love for you" She started out low, and finished strong. I think the strike against her was the fact that she sang the same song 3 times? She is very emotional and I think in the end it over powered her performances. She was kind of "In and Out".

Anoop Sang "My Perogative" The audience loved it;O) Anoop is a crowd pleaser. Vocally he might not be the best singer, but he adds energy and feeling to the songs.

___________________________________

Jasmine - yes - Surprised, but happy she has a chance.
Ricky - No - I liked Ricky. I hope he continues to sing.
Megan - yes - The Judges like Megan so this one doesn't surprise me. She has the amy winehouse thing going for her.
Tatiana - No, she had that second chance. I like her voice and I hope she will continue to sing.
Jesse - No
Von - No - I just couldn't connect with him as a singer
Matt - Yes - Matt can singtheblues
Anoop - Yes - Anoop is from Chapel Hill so I wish him luck Wink

They snuck a twist in with "Top 13"

Janet...thanks for this update.
The show ran long..and our TiVo shut off..so we missed the ending.

Top 13 huh?

I think the picks by the judges were correct though...

Bring on the show now!

ps-Have you heard any of David Cook's CD? It is really, really good. His next single.Bar-ba-sol is going to be a HUGE hit I predict.
Also, his song Permanent is very touching and well sung.(It's about his brother who has cancer)
