Why????

Brazillian music is very cachy and grooves really well. Instead of electronic noises, they use lots of good percussion and real instruments. Blend this with a little orchestra and Seal and I think there's a lot of potential.

Seal said in his concert in Minneapolis that his upcoming album will not be a cover album and that it will have the Brazillian roots.

I am really excited about this and hope it comes to fruitation. I'll admit, I like Seal's slower stuff, but I sure will take more "dance" Seal than no Seal!

I'm glad Seal found commercial success with Soul but if you ask me, anything Seal has written is better than what's on that album. And they're classics! I know..

But there's something about Seal's melodies that are nowhere to be found on Soul.

I'll take Human Beings, System, Seal IV over Soul anyday.

I don't want to hear a "System II". I want music similiar to what he did on the 2nd album. The formula for the 2nd album worked and the dance thing didn't.

It's obvious that people aren't interested in Seal doing dance music, or else the sales would have been better.

You all got me to digging out all my Seal albums to compare songs. Each album has a few songs that I love. Seal Debut - Crazy, Killer, Whirlpool, Future Love Paradise, Wild, Violet...just about the whole album is gem to me. On Seal2 - Bring it on, KFAR, I love (Newborn friend...brother's in Rhythm remix), and If I could.

skip to my lou to Human Beings which is classic in it's own right. Lost my faith is my fav, fav, with Just Like you said, and Human Beings rounding out my likes.

Seal IV - Waiting for you, Touch, Tinseltown, Love's Divine, and Heavenly.

On System - I love Rolling and Loaded, Amazing, Immaculate, and The Right Life.

Should he go back to those sounds...those feelings? Each song was a part of his life at one time, but, time doesn't always hold onto the past. Each second is a movement beyond the mask.

Creating sound is an art. Most artists/Painters would paint the world either as it was, or how they saw it. Picasso, Dahli(sp?)...created from their mind's eye.

I look forward to new beats...new sounds...where ever his newbornsoulsound takes us.

Love, Janet

These numbers are from Nielsen soundscan, so I would guess they are U.S. sales.

I don't think there's going to be a "System II." I will bet that the next album will be its own. I'm sure that it will have more dance rooted music like System and Seal I, but I will also bet that there might be one or two more "Seal II-like" songs on there as well. Keep in mind, System did have Rolling and Immaculate which harks on some of the older stuff. And for reasons mentioned in my previous post, the upcoming album will have a much different sound if the Brazilian stuff is true (it may be more to your liking).

I sure am interested and I'm sure plenty others are. It's a bit of too harsh of a generalization to make, doncha think? Everyone that I have played System for liked it enough to buy it considering that they had no idea that it existed or that Seal was even still singing. I don't think it's a reflection of Seal's music as much as how Seal fits in with pop culture. People are looking for drama all the time (look at Spears, Madonna). Seal doens't make useless drama and so he is not interesting to the media, etc. Seal makes well-refined music rather than making an album just to make money which is why you and I are fans of Seal and care so much about his music.

While the album sales for System may have been less than stellar, lets not forget that Amazing sold and performed amazingly well. It would also be worth making the point that if we were just going to go with album sales performance, the next album would be more covers! I think the next album will be very different in sound and style to System, especially with the input of David Foster

If Seal wants to create music for the love of it that's great but, records labels are worried about album sales. Case in point, the 'Togetherland' situation.

The new heads that took over in 2001, didn't think the album was good enough, despite what Seal claims. So they refused to distribute it and Seal IV was recorded in it's place.

If an artist doesn't generate the amount of revenue they are expecting, they will drop an artist. I've seen it happen plenty of times.

Unless Seal has been putting up the money for his projects, I can't see WB keeping him signed
for quite too long.

Again I say, if people wanted to hear a dance record from Seal, then the sales would have been better. You can't dispute the sales.

I agree Deef, so following that theory, the next album will have to be a covers album, since Soul has nailed over 3 million worldwide sales.

Right, so tell me again why Seal is making another "dance" album then?

I don't want to bash on Soul, but I know it's the first Seal album I haven't bought in CD form. And I really only care about the music, unless Seal writes more cryptic poetry like he did with Seal II's liner notes (but iTunes also allows for electronic liner notes). but I try to support his CD sales since it has been an industry metric for a while. However, it's time for that model to go away. if the industry can't handle measuring electronic sales, it shouldn't be running things anymore.
Here's hoping Seal's next album comes from his own creativity, not some dictation from crusty old executives looking for a fast buck.

Well...from what I see, Seal isn't worried about how many albums he sells. He's just making music, which is what the record business should be about. Allowing the artist to express their creativity.

But, you have to keep in mind that it's a business. If it weren't the case then the whole 'Togetherland/Seal IV' issue wouldn't have happened. Until Seal feels a little pressure from WB to create albums that might sell more, he'll continue in making the music he feels.

Sooner or later the label might look at him as being a kind of "dead weight", making their decision whether to keep him or not.

Look at the linear notes in the 'System' album he says "A man of my age, with huge responsiblities and a soft spoken voice, a company's future in his hands." What company could he be talking about....WinkWB? With the poor sales of 'System', he'd better rethink his plan.

So I am under the assumption you would want Warner Brothers to put pressure on Seal so he will make a Seal'94 inspired album (more $$) instead the brazilian influnced album?

I understand the whole Togetherland issue, and I really would like to hear the whole album. But, I also understand Seal's point of view, regardless if he really thinks it's crap or not...it is an embarrasment to him, and he much rather not rehash the whole ordeal. To put a postive spin to this, if it wasn't for the junking of the Togetherland project we would have never got Seal IV, which is simply fantastic. (I think it is the closest to a "Best of" sounding album for Seal.)

Some of the others have mentioned how each album reflects whatever Seal is going through. Right now, he is on top of the world and singing about his struggle and how he reached success in life. So what better way to share the mood than to dance to it? I'm sure Seal has some more solid Seal'94-like material in him, but now just might not be the right time.

I do think that Seal is famous enough that if need be, he can find a different company to distribute his music. It's all up to WB to decide if they really want that to happen. That would sound to me like a deciding factor.

Deef, I should stop giving you so much crap, but I just happened to notice a change in tone towards Seal from you. Hopefully you do have some of Togetherland to appreciate... That said, what's there not to like in any of the material that Seal has put out?

I feel that WB can do whatever they want at this point, it's their money being invested, not mine. Again, it's a business first.

Funny, I feel that way about Human Being. If HB didn't bomb then Togetherland wouldn't have been conceived.

The reason why I desire that album so much is because Seal finally went in the direction I wanted him to go. That whole outer-worldly, futuristic sound is what I wanted to hear from him. Heavenly has that particular sound and is my favorite track from Seal IV. Smile

But I just happened to notice a change in tone towards Seal from you

No, my feelings towards Seal are the same. MadRight now, I just want him to put out music that I will enjoy.

Heavenly is one of my favourite tracks from Seal IV also - I consider it the 'spiritual sequel' to my all time favourite Seal song - Human Beings (which he completely surprised me on Saturday by opening the show with in T.O)
