I haven't yet heard this interpretation. Curious is anyone else translated the lyrics this way.

The song involves two people. At one point, person A gets involved in cocaine and influences person B to partake. Ultimately, person B decides they no longer wish to partake but is torn because of the feelings he/she/it has for person A. case in point the following lyrics

BUT DID YOU KNOW, THAT WHEN IT SNOWS...(snow is a slang term for coke) MY EYES BECOME ENLARGED AND THE LIGHT THAT YOU SHINE CAN'T BE SEEN....This person is now high as a kite. The eyes enlarged refers to the pupil dialation that happens when you get high.

The opening lyrics refer to person B being alone, the person A comes along and brighten up their world.

All of the lyrics refer to the detriment of drug use and how it affects the significant other.

Please share your thoughts.

Hi Robert.

I was really suprised when I read your interpretation (I hope I spell that correct because English is not my mothertongue).
I never looked at it that way. I knew that "snow" often refers to cocaine, but I never made the connection between cocaine and this song. It could be possible.
Though, there's one thing I don't get: if person B want to stop with the drugs, then why does it repeat the first verse at the end of the song. Is that because of his feelings for person A, or is there another explaination.

Hope you can help me with this, and share your thoughts.

Take care,
Mirna Best

Knowing Seal, one of the persons could actually be the one person's inner demons. You know, the right side and left side of the brain type of thing. Or the one person dealing with it from both angles. All conjecture of course.

Interesting, I've never connected that song to cocaine use. I always thought when someone bares their true soul they bloomed, but when their soul ceases to reveal, (like holding a secret) it's like snow; coldness.

Seal is BEST with metaphors!

Hi Robert,
I never thought about Akiss from a rose that way.
Though, I know the rose is beautiful yet thorny. And so is love between people.
But I know Seal always talks about the ills of drug use.
Like in "Dreaming In Metaphors" where he says..."turn to the needle, back to the cradle"
It means that a person has turned to drugs again (like he/she used to in the heat of the moment) the 'cradle' signifying the past/beginning.

I always want to imagine that "future love paradise" has to do with (anti)drugs, but I havent figured its relevance.Though "paradise" is a kind of drug too.Let you know when i figure that out, logically.

Love and thanks,
Koko.

then again thats just my silly lil way of thinking lol.

If you listen to a few of Seal's songs they mention drugs. I heard one time that Puff The Magic Dragon was referring to use of marijauna. Not that Seal wrote it or anything. Then there's a line in Future Love Paradise where you hear, "No the riders will not stop us, cause the only drug they'll find is paradise.." I thjought there was another song in which you hear of drugs, but I can't remember which one it is.

I'm new in the forum and a new Seal fan. I'm learning to appreciate his music through the song "Kiss from a Rose". So I was very disappointed when I read Robert Valdes interpretation. But I think the song has a special meaning: love can heal a broken heart.
God bless you all!!!

"Kiss from a rose on the grave" to me refers to loving someone in a relationship that is over. You long for that person to breathe life into the relationship just for a moment and then the feelings die because you know it won't work. The "snow" comment is when your are under the influence of a drug or drinking, you view that same person with rose colored glasses.

You could think that it is about illicit drug use but you have to go back to the song and of course know seal is more metaphorical than that to just write a song promoting drugs.

we can start from the beginning. The tower on the sea. a person who is alone. You became the light on tha dark side of me = no longer lonely.

love remains a drug that's the high and NOTthe pill.
a metaphor is being used as : when it LOVE being it, when it snows. my eyes become large and the light that you shine can't be seen.

That can mean almost alot of things. it is built into a very elusive meaning. when people are love making it becomes a powerful thing. When it snows. the question is how can someone make someone feel so good and be so bad at the same time. But, the loneliness is be overcome by the aspect of a persons good qualities that someone overcomes a person's presumed bad ones.

a kiss from a rose is something like a death of the former darker idea of being a lone tower on the sea. Then more and more love making changes the person makes it even more dificult to be the same person. Now that the rose is in bloom -a possible reference to the female genitals. Your light hits the gloom on the gray. Gloom can be the heart in this and thus the heart is changing changing from darkness coming into a more less alone color. Black to gray.

snow = love
drug = love
rose = person
grave = death
kiss = closeness
eyes being large = being overcome or coming out of from the loneliness

G.
quote:
"Kiss From A Rose"

There used to be a graying tower alone on the sea.
You became the light on the dark side of me.
Love remained a drug that's the high and not the pill.
But did you know,
That when it snows,
My eyes become large and
The light that you shine can be seen.
Baby,
I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the gray.
Ooh,
The more I get of you,
The stranger it feels, yeah.
And now that your rose is in bloom.
A light hits the gloom on the gray.
There is so much a man can tell you,
So much he can say.
You remain,
My power, my pleasure, my pain, baby
To me you're like a growing addiction that I can't deny.
Won't you tell me is that healthy, baby?
But did you know,
That when it snows,
My eyes become large and the light that you shine can be seen.
Baby,
I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the gray.
Ooh, the more I get of you
The stranger it feels, yeah
Now that your rose is in bloom.
A light hits the gloom on the gray,
I've been kissed by a rose on the gray,
I've been kissed by a rose
I've been kissed by a rose on the gray,
...And if I should fall along the way
I've been kissed by a rose
...been kissed by a rose on the gray.
There is so much a man can tell you,
So much he can say.
You remain
My power, my pleasure, my pain.
To me you're like a growing addiction that I can't deny, yeah
Won't you tell me is that healthy, baby.
But did you know,
That when it snows,
My eyes become large and the light that you shine can be seen.
Baby,
I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the gray.
Ooh, the more I get of you
The stranger it feels, yeah
Now that your rose is in bloom,
A light hits the gloom on the gray.
Yes I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the gray
Ooh, the more I get of you
The stranger it feels, yeah
And now that your rose is in bloom
A light hits the gloom on the gray
Now that your rose is in bloom,
A light hits the gloom on the gray.
