I love this song. It's one of my favorites. I was just listening to it in my hottub, also in my car.

Old man Honeycutt walked from Pyatt to his home 2 miles away. He was crossin' Crooked Creek, when his wife heard him callin' "Sissy, come and get me...I'm somewhere over the moon" (the moon was shining on the water).

Colours fade away, like words do too,...eventually.

Sometimes they brihghten up as things happening in live makes your inner life and feelings more intnese...colours start to glimpse very much...brighten.

When feelings or remebering things happening fades, its kind of sad to let go,... but who knows maybe for good vibes to enter your life again...

Love, Sylvia.

Yeah, Colour is definitely a great song. Seal says it's a song about racial harmony. Something like a dream about world without colors. I suppose one may interpret this song this way. However, for me it’s kind of farfetched meaning.
No matter how many times I hear Colour, I feel it’s a song about dying love. I just can’t help it. Maybe because I feel like the whole HB album is about dying, bleeding, pain, suffering, lost feelings, making mistakes. Just listen to Human Beings Reprise… Pretty dark. I think we can not forget about the rest of HB when we talk about any of the songs. Well, when we talk about most of them.
Anyway, I think color is about feelings. Dying love is that fading color. Fading to gray, so there is no bright thing/feeling left. So, he closes his eyes and thinks about yesterday, when everything was fine, colorful if you will. Midnight is like friend, as night is bringing solace (is it good word?). “Will we see a beginning in the end?” He’s asking if the life afterwards is possible, if he will be able to stand up again and begin new life after this love end. “Tell me who are you for anyway?” We are for other people, for persons we love. “God only knows what we’ve put in that paint. God only knows…” – that paint/color is love. This two person’s love is built by their feelings, memories, moments spent together, you name it. Really, God only knows how the color of love is created between two beings. It’s hard to explain, but I hope you know what I mean. It’s not about racism; it’s about color of their love, which is dying, fading away. And he dreams about past, he dreams about love he had. But it’s not possible anymore. It was great, but now it just empty feeling. “I dreamed so excited, but I feel so bored”.
Does anybody feel the same way?
Peace,
Konrad
PS: This is an album that tells the story of a broken man…

Colour
Fades to grey
I dream so exciting
But I feel so bold...

I like your feelings on this song, but it hits me from a different angle, that there's something in "that paint" that's causing us to lash out at each other as human beings throughout history, and not truly understand and appreciate each other's differences. And that ultimately, when we pass back into our true forms, our souls have a complete absence of colour, that everything does "fade to grey", that death is the equalizer, and beyond death is where true happiness and love is to be shared...just some thoughts...

Love, love, love,

Randhir

That is also how I see that song Randhir. Something I truely believe .But as Seal said no intreptation is wrong one of the reasons he refuses to add written lyrics to his cds . So Konrad I think Seal wants you to take what you found as your truth to this song.

Rita and Randhir,
Yes, you're right. I really like Randhir interpretation. It doesn't really matter if it's about two persons or whole mankind. The message is that we need to learn how to coexist with others, how to be for others and how to, as Randhir said, “truly understand and appreciate each other's differences”.
I think that it’s good to have different points of view, as this makes us think more and share our feelings. But I’m still sticking to my interpretation. Big Grin I prefer to hear “I dreamed so excited, but I feel so bored…” as it makes more sense to me. Sure, you can feel excited AND bold. However “but” in the sentence suggests rather some contradiction. Thus, I prefer: dream so excited BUT feel so bored. Smile Anyway, it’s just an interpretation.
Rita, I know Seal doesn’t put his lyrics, since he likes people to feel his songs differently. We are the best example of it. Smile However, I wish that he could print some lyrics somewhere, as not everybody is English. Heh, looks like even native English speakers had some problems with his lyrics. Now imagine how all the foreigners are feeling, when they crave for Seal’s words, but they have problems with understanding what he is singing. Painful frustration. Smile But I have to admit that it actually forced me to learn and improve English (though it still sucks). Wink
Cheers,
Konrad

Where are you from orginally Konrad? BTW your English is very good and I too sometime wish that his lyrics were written somewhere I'm notourious for screwing up lyrics! But it does make you think!

Thank you for your kind words.
I'm from Poland, working now in the US. When I came to the US, I thought I would be able to finally see Seal. However, around the time I came to Boston, Seal moved back to England. Tough luck! But I saw him eventually, here in Boston. So, I suppose my wish came true. Big Grin
Yeah, lyrics can be a problem sometimes. In case of Seal's words, it's more like haunting. I'm kind of obsessed when I try to figure them out. Funny, some people care only about music and lyrics are of secondary matter. But I'm crazy about knowing what a song is about. Then it does make me think even more. Smile
Peace,
Konrad

Konrad,

Hey...we got something in common. English is also my second language. As my name indicates, I am from Germany. Smile

I can completely relate to you. I also have to find out what a song is all about. I will listen to one song over and over again until it makes complete sense in my mind regarding lyrics. I also search the Internet for lyrics to see how other individuals interpret the song. It is funny at times - just as we have discovered on this site - what different individuals hear within the lyrics.

I know I'm reviving an old thread, but I would like to discuss the Human Being Album, as I just got it not too long ago. Konrad's interpretation is precisely the way I understood it to be. It seems to me that Human Beings is a telling a story of love that in the ends doesn't work out in which it tears the person apart as he still loves the person. The pamphlet is very hard for me to read and understand, but after all of the letters where he thanks people he states, Elizabet - My state of grace, forever love. Forgive me if I'm makeing a fool of myself, but who is Elizabeth? I think you probably know where I'm going with this...

Someone please correct me but isn't Colour written in 3/4 time?

I'm writing a novel and would like to know if my hearing is correct on this point.
Michael, listening and counting, in Seattle.
