here are the lyrics to the song from HB.

Does anyone love this song?

Does anyone know what it's about?

Colour
(Seal) 1998

Ohhh....
Colour fades away
With a light descending on the day
Midnight sees your friend
Oh could you call his name
Would you know his name

I come here for your love
But, God only knows...
Colour fades away
Good times here today
Meanwhile you would say
I close my eyes

Colour (fades away)
Tell I you for anyway
Midnight is your friend
Will we see a beginning in the end

God only knows what we've put in that paint
God only knows...
Colour fades away
Good times here today
Here most every day
Meanwhile you would say
I close my eyes...
and dream of only yesterday

Colour fades away
Good time here today
Here most everyday
Meanwhile you would say
That I clo...se my eyes

Colour
Fades to grey
I dream so exciting
But I, I feel so bo...ld

Midnight... midnight... midnight...

Midnight... midnight... midnight...

It's on the Human Being album, you can probably preview it on a site like Amazon.

Here's a live version:

click

Dunno what the meaning of the song is, feels like a blurry dream sequence to me. In concert it seems to me that the emphasis on one line is:

"Meanwhile" you would say

As if someone is saying to him "meanwhile" in a way that is trying to make him get to the point of what he's trying to say. That's a guess Smile

Do as you do, cause if you don't, or if you do, people will say, to say,...you know? Be true to you and do as you do;O)

Are we living a dream when we wake? Sometimes, we have a realistic life, one that we have worked very hard for, but in our dreams we travel back to our roots, and the dreams haunt us during the day, and remind us at night. We try to make sense of what is old, what is over, and can't be changed, but it is a part of who we are... Love, Janet

Yes, it's a great song. I thought I heard in an interview from years ago that it is about prejudice and stripping away the color from our skin. However, as I read the words, it would be a very abstract meaning.

This is an amazing song. When Human Beings came out I heard it frequently while shopping in grocery stores. It's a crime that this album received little to no support by commercial Tv and Radio. I feel the Human Beings Album and Tour was most the amozing amazing collective efforts in Seals recording career. The album seems so thick in orchestration. The use of backward and echo drum fills adds a wonderfull touch to an aura of bliss that is carried throughout the production. Trevor Horn is a genious. The tour had an amazingly tight band with Papa Bear Tony Levin on Bass. While the Seal IV Album and Tour are wonderfull projects receiving good support I dream of only yesterday.

Eddie,
I always thought the last line was: I dream so excited…but I…I feel so bored.
Hmmm…but it’s bold…okay! DUH!

Another song I love by Seal…ummm…there’s at least 44 of them.

Anyway…

Darkness comes as day fades to night
Once midnight comes and you’re asleep you dream
Dreaming is your friend...you have good times in your dreams exciting times in your dreams
Others will tell you to stop dreaming and open your eyes…your living in a dream world
But in your dream world is where love is that’s what your going there for.

When you dream your spirit travels meets spirit guide, listen, whatever
Sometimes they don’t give you the answer you want and you wonder…are you for me? Or against me?
…Tell me who are you for… anyway?

They are here for you...but we don't see that cause we are hard headed. Eyes closed. Blind.

Much Love,
Althea

Last night, Seal said it was about a world looking much like "this room," meaning The Wiltern, as he looked out on us, calling us all "one Colour."

Sealious you made a valid point.
In addition to his work with Seal I have always enjoyed David's work with many different acts. Sting, Peter Gabriel, Stanley Clarke, Eric Clapton, Bruce Springstein ....... The list goes on. An amazing musician. One of these days I'll pick up a David Sancious and Tone solo recording. The Human Beings album and touring band had a sound fueled with the highest of octane methanol that the VW Beatle commercialistic society left in the dust. It's too bad most of the world needs commercial programming to tell them what they like.

Fortunately Seal has decided to keep Colours in the current tour program. I so much wish a good DVD of the Human Beings Tour could be made available.

On some of the versions he sings:

"Meanwhile, you would say"

"Meanwhile, you could say"

I know...small detail, but the songs meaning is interesting to me and little things like that can make a difference. So I was paying very close attention to the words at the concert.

I understand. Details are essential. It's why I love the changes in Don't Cry that I've witnessed over the years. He's like Paul Robeson in this regard. Yay!

Colour is one of my all time favorites...along with Future Love Paradise and Touch. Idon't really know what Seal's meaning is, but I think it means that someone he cared for alot, he lost and wants back to be them. Not sure, just my input.

I think the song is about an ideal day or time when skin color will not be an issue.

This song describes a life without racial boundries. When Seal says "God only knows what we have put in that paint" this means to me that
nobody really knows the racial makeup of a person. Quite an amazing track! Smile
