The Beginning |
HI. I teach middle school and in trying to reach students through poetry and looking at song lyrics I was hoping to get a bit of background on the song Dreaming in Metaphors. Metaphors are one of the most difficult poetic devices for students to write, and understand, and they were wondering what was the motivation related to "dreaming in metaphors." (We had a lot of thoughts and discussion on this) Since a metaphor is saying something IS something else they were wondering about the lyrics. Is it the obvious meaning/translation or ...

Anyway, Patti, that is indeed interesting. Well I think it is the obvious meaning here. "Why must we dream in metaphors" must be related to Seal having dreams in metaphors and not being able to figure them out. I must say that this immediately sounded familliar to me, as I oftentimes dream about things that I do no understand; they seem to be metaphors for things going on in my own life.
