seal - what is the meaning of the lyrics to "violet"?

i too have come to this message board to find out about this song, and have never had a reply. i found this song while living in Spain and i have listened to it at least once a week, since 1992. probably one of the most beautiful songs i've heard....so Seal...you there? can you help us out?

It's my absolute favorite Seal song. What a way to end his 1st album. Amazing !

Personally I don't want to know what it's about. I like it abstract and dream-like. I just grab it's wings and fly...

In my humble opinion, I believe this song is about people going in different directions in their lives. Meanwhile, they cherish what they had and they exictedly look ahead to the unknown future with a promise of never forgetting the experiences shared.

I believe the song to be a perspective of self speaking in multiplicity of one's ownership in identifying the changing aspect of who is and what is becoming and what it takes to pass into the development of that changing persona. He says, 'it is always something.' To obtain spiritual enlightenment or understanding it is not easy - it is always something. The song starts out you comb your hair in a different light life? change the chair seem to think that's alright.. You need a change that's alright. Seal is now bald. (HINT: he is talking about himself (IMHO))

He goes on to give tears and to ask if you take those will you watch the sun rise(Again talking to himself ( an inward reflection of rising or ascention). Water is a strong thing in the human emotion because it forces the body to cleanse by causeing fluids to reverse course. He uses this in several songs the most notable being 'LOVE'S DIVINE'. Violet is a chakra or purple god's color.

Picture if you were changing and then made that planned change it is a self confirming evolution that was built on the idea of self betterment.

Eventually, when you wake (lyrics /suddenly you and I will wake and maybe time will tell) time will tell. You can start all over with a new version of yourself capable of improving on the old and enter into bliss. A happiness that is fabricated out of the imagination forged in dreams and thoughtfully exposed to a kinship out of a means which are narcissistic in nature but necessary for survival. Survival being your ability to love not only yourself but others without condition, without boundaries, without ever running out of that love when it needed the most (like when the person you love does not love you enough or seems to fail you miserably).

I write all of this to say that there is a deeper complex side to all of is music he is taking us in metaphorical almost proverb type verbage and discusses many changes within himself and his manifestation and eventual identity through song. Shakespeare did it in plays, BArds did it in song and music - Seal is a type of bard for travel - the exploration of self and the universal body earth and heaven. Our religion (whatever that is) helps to remind us of our connection to a larger more meaningful life and possible afterlife. Seal reminds us that we are first and foremost living. The positve side to all of that is the chance to make mistakes and recover but, then to get into the real stuff, the stuff we are all here to experience and enjoy - LOve, LovE, lOVe, LovE.


Everyone go back and listen to the begining of all the albums and remember the man ran away to live this life - doing what his father told him not to. His mother was dying and he has a brother who loves him and was home hoping his older brother was o.k. while he travelled all through the world at a very young age. This is an adventure and a celebration. A desire that compelled him to not surrender but to be what he always wanted this is tenacious and bold. Turn it way up and know he had his ordeals and now he came from whatever kind of label you wanna call home to being married to not one of the most beautiful. But THE most beautiful top model in the entire world. If you ask why its because they both are trouble makers. ~la
